Maggie Evans of Maggie Evans Designs is an amazing dress designer in Boulder, Colorado. I’ve worked with her on a styled shoot in the past, where we used two of her amazing dresses and she even rocked one of them (Click here for Part 1 and Part 2).
She’s also my wedding dress savior. After having a really bad alteration job, where my strapless dress would fall to my belly button every time I sat, I contacted Maggie in a hurry and asked her if she could fix it. It was two weeks before my wedding day and ten days before we departed for Pittsburgh. She was sure she could. Seven days later I walked out with a dress that fit my body perfectly and confidence that everything really was going to be alright. Let me tell you, that confidence is priceless.
If you want a one of a kind dress, or just want a solid wedding dress seamstress, Maggie is your girl. I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have.
Is your business name unique? How did you come up with Maggie Evans Designs?
It’s unique to me! And it’s a common way that designers name their brands, so keeping in line with that trend. (And that’s about the only trend I keep in line with!)
How long have you been in business?
I’ve been running my own design and sewing studio for three years, but have been designing and sewing professionally for almost 15 years!
What is your primary role in your business?
Mastermind! I wear a lot of hats in my job, and it’s a job to keep on top of all of them at this point. When I started I didn’t realize how little I’d actually be designing. I sew a lot, which I love, but I also take care of all the other parts of my business.
What is your service/product and what makes it unique?
I help women have empowered experiences as they prepare for their wedding. I do that by creating customized wedding gowns that are artful, one-of-a-kind and full of texture. I also practice as an art therapist, giving women a safe container to explore and process their feelings and experiences as they plan their wedding and move into marriage. Blending these two interests and skill sets has been a dream of mine for well over 10 years and it’s finally coming together!
What do you love most about working in the wedding business?
I love LOVE! And love is why we are all here, working in the wedding industry. I am also very interested in the rite of passage that each woman prepares for as she prepares for marriage. I think our culture way under values and under supports the complexity of this transition, and part of my work is bringing the authenticity of weddings and marriage to light.
Who is your ideal client?
She is feminine, yet edgy. She loves the arts, museums and off-beat galleries. She’s into EXPERIENCE, including travel, food, self-growth, learning and all things sensual (of the senses). She loves metaphor, texture, complexity and LOVE!
If you could give one piece of advice to couples who are shopping for a dress designer, what would it be?
Follow your heart. Dig deep. You don’t have to choose what is trending on Pinterest. There is a whole other world out there full of gowns that are well-crafted and artful, which is where my work lives.
What do you like to do in you free time?
READ. I love to read. Cook, knit, outdoors adventures with my son, garden, deep conversations with close friends.
What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Start my own business! And have my son at home without any drugs (that one continues to be my proudest moment)!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Right now I would head to Barcelona, Spain with my son to visit my brother. Second on the list is somewhere tropical, anywhere with a sandy beach and clean water.
